Grelen Nursery is a premier grower of high-quality plants, shrubs, and trees, cultivated on our 1,000-acre farm in Somerset, Virginia. In addition to supplying exceptional plant material, Grelen specializes in landscape installation using large, mature trees and shrubs grown on the nursery—allowing us to create landscapes with immediate impact. With seven experienced landscape crews, we provide full-service landscaping, hardscaping, and planting services—from initial installation to ongoing care—helping clients create and maintain beautiful, enduring landscapes.
Our Story
Dan Gregg, Founder of Grelen Nursery, Inc., has loved plants and trees for as long as he can remember. In 1990, he left a career in banking to follow his passion, moving to Orange County, Virginia to establish Grelen Nursery on a corner of his grandparents’ cattle farm.

As demand grew, Dan partnered with Zeke Galvin in 1997 to expand the landscaping side of the business. Together they built a company rooted in horticultural knowledge, quality plant material, and a commitment to creating lasting landscapes.

In 2003, Gregg and Galvin purchased a 200-acre farm in Somerset, Virginia, providing much-needed room to grow. Over the years, Grelen acquired adjoining properties, and today the nursery spans more than 1,000 acres, making it one of the largest rural businesses in Virginia. Across the nursery, Grelen grows hundreds of varieties of trees, shrubs, and plants while offering a full range of landscaping, hardscaping, and tree care services through seven dedicated landscape crews. After more than three decades, Grelen Nursery has earned a reputation for exceptional quality and trusted horticultural expertise.

The natural beauty of the land and the nursery itself eventually inspired a new idea. In 2010, the vision for a destination garden market and pick-your-own farm began to take shape. When the concept was ready to come to life, Leslie Gregg joined the business to oversee buying, marketing, and operations for what would become The Market at Grelen, which opened in 2013.

Today, Grelen Nursery remains the foundation of the Grelen family of businesses, growing exceptional trees and stewarding the land that supports The Market at Grelen and Grelen’s expanding collection of hospitality and event properties.

Grelen Nursery operates by appointment and provides landscaping, tree installation, and landscape maintenance services throughout the region.

What Makes Grelen Unique?
One of the things that makes Grelen unique is the opportunity to experience the nursery firsthand. Clients are welcome to walk the Grelen trails (6 miles) through our nursery fields to see trees growing across the landscape or take a guided tour with our plant manager. This hands-on approach allows visitors to find the perfect species and size for their property.

Grelen Nursery and The Market at Grelen are sister companies located on Grelen’s 1,000-acre nursery in Somerset, Virginia. Founded in 1990, Grelen Nursery grows and sells large plant material and manages landscaping projects throughout the region. The Market at Grelen, established in 2013, serves as the retail arm of the property—a European-style garden shop and café where guests can shop seasonal plants and garden goods while enjoying the beauty of the surrounding nursery and walking trails.
